The Quartet

Praised for their “emotional investment” and “decisive” interpretations (Toronto Star) and “intense” and “hot-blooded” performances (Globe and Mail), the Tokai Quartet is one of Canada’s leading string quartets. They became prizewinners at the 2007 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the first Canadian group to do so since 1992. Their vibrant performances have earned them enthusiastic audiences and a growing demand across Canada.

Formed in 2002 at the University of Toronto, the Quartet studied under Lorand Fenyves and received mentorship from the St. Lawrence, Emerson, Ying, Orion, and Leipzig Quartets, as well as prominent musicians like Scott St. John and Roberto Diaz.

Committed to education, the Tokai Quartet has taught at the University of Toronto, Queen’s University, and various chamber music programs. They have performed at major festivals, including the Toronto Summer Music Festival and the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, and toured Atlantic Canada extensively.

Their accolades include the Felix Galimir Award, the Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation Award, and an Ontario Arts Council grant for their multimedia children’s production The Snow Queen, which was nominated for a Dora Award.
